Brocade : Weaving a Story
Brocade is a rich fabric that is used in India by people of all ages. The complex detailed designs with Golden and Silver Zari work is best for every occasion and is truly a luxury to own. But what many people don’t know is that Brocade designs are not embroidered rather the florals of gold are woven directly into the Fabric. Brocade is often made in coloured silks which looks even more beautiful as the raise Zari work clearly stands out.
In India, Brocade can be traced back to the Mughal times where it was adorned by the kings and courts. Akbar, as we all know was a man who was fascinated with art and culture. The manufacture of brocade actually began in China. It is called the treasure of the Orient. As china guarded its Silk Secret, Brocade was therefore produced their first. After silk spread around the world so did brocade. The fabric thus became important in the Italian Renaissance and the Byzantine Empire. Brocade fabrics are woven on a Jacquard loom, which makes it easier to create complex and intricate designs. The modern times have made it easy to make brocade due to computerised looms. Brocades journey has been a long one from trade routes through ancient empires, now it is found in haute-couture fashion as well as interior design. Today we see brocade being used by the big brands and being adorned by Western pop stars and actors. It’s safe to say that brocade has already made its way into pop culture.
The process is tedious and it can take anytime between 15 days till even 6 months to make a brocade fabric. There are about 40,000 weavers, artisans and dyers working in this industry at Banaras.
- Design – The design is drawn on a Graph paper. It is a reference that is made into a set of cards and loaded to the Jacquard loom.
- Yarn – The coloured silk yarns are dyed and processed. They are then spun to prepare the warp and the weft.
- Weaving – Preparing the loom is a time taking process. After the loom is set the fabric is woven according to the jacquard cards. They help in understanding which yarns are pulled up or down.
